Speaking promotion for a Monday

Well as I promised in my last post, I shall continue to keep you up to date on my promotional doings regarding my upcoming public appearance in Lowell this coming Oct. 7th.

I don’t have any major news to share at the moment…   What is so often happens in promotional work is that you feel very much like a plant trying to reproduce.  You make a beautiful flower, you fill it with nectar, you crank out as much pollen as you can, but at that point, you just have to hope that a few bees will come along, and they haven’t all been killed by DDT.

While last week’s promotional work was of the more “interruptions/direct” variety of trying to get my information shoved into the ears and eyes of radio listeners and newspaper readers, today I am doing something a little different.  I’m taking a page from the David Meerman Scott playbook, and producing content.

(By the way, David has a new book coming out November 1, and I’m not totally sure, but I think I am in it!  He asked if he could use a story I told in a previous blog post as an example in the book.  More on that later.)

I did an article a couple of weeks ago that was published in advisor perspectives, titled “A Bass Player’s Perspective on Leadership.”  This got a surprisingly large amount of positive feedback, so I decided to do a little more with the article.  I reposted it on a human resources web site (hr.com), also on weblogtheworld.com and on my own blog (scroll down, see below)

Already, one former association manager client, after reading the article, said that she is going to pitch it as a presentation to some of her association clients.  I love it.  That was not expected.

Again, I am paraphrasing lessons from David Meerman Scott, but it is very surprising what kinds of unintended marketing results you get from producing interesting content.  People are much more likely to pass along your “message” if it is embedded in something of actual value/ usefulness.

So I have just finished another article which I submitted to adviser perspectives.  (I have no particular expertise in money management, but Robert the publisher is willing to publish my articles within seven days of my submitting them, so I find that to be a very appealing platform.  There is a lot to be said for having a blog, but I am finding it is much better to glom on to someone else’s platform and take advantage of their established readership.)  They tell me they will publish it next Tuesday.  It’s titled “leadership lessons from the dance floor.”  I hope my dance friends don’t shoot me for what I put in it.

So I have two ideas for articles that I want to write today.  I will probably submit them to adviser perspectives and see what happens after . . .

Marketing.  You just never know . . .
