Greetings culture lovers! Below is a brief newsletter of orchestra-related happenings and publications here at Justin Locke Productions!
Biggest news of the spring was the Bahamian premiere of Peter VS the Wolf! (This orchestral courtroom comedy is the unofficial sequel to "Peter AND the Wolf," and has been done by orchestras all over the world.) I did in fact go down to see it– yes, I suffer for my art. Congrats, and thank-you, to Maestra JoAnne Connaughton for putting on such a great sold-out event in the theater of the Atlantis Resort.
(Above, the District Attorney and the Wolf argue over the horns' testimony.)
Peter VS the Wolf had its first performances in Montana and Mississippi this season, with Helena and Missoula (Montana), and Meridian (Mississippi). The show is gearing up for next season, with repeats in the Bahamas, as well as my dear friends at the Syracuse Symphony doing it for — wow — the fifth time now? Also Albany GA, Jacksonville FL, and a performance in Brasil too!
Phantom of the Orchestra also had some exotic adventures, being done on family concerts in both Guam and Poland, and will have its Washington State premiere this fall!
With both shows, a most interesting trend is being seen: several orchestras are using the shows, not just for daytime family concerts, but for nighttime gala fundraising events as well! Hey, I guess they aren't just for breakfast anymore!
REAL MEN DON'T REHEARSE: Perhaps you saw it featured this month in either Strings Magazine or Bass World! Amazingly, this amusing musical memoir is now in its FIFTH printing! (You can read excerpts and order it on my website, www.justinlocke.com, or buy it on Amazon.
I am doing ever more speaking on the book– I had the honor of speaking at the Retail Print Music Dealers' Association in April, and I'll be a keynote speaker at the Florida String Teachers and Florida Orchestra Association Conference in July. Also, brand new: Principles of Applied Stupidity— a most unique aproach to gaining greater command and control over your life. It's the latest book and presentation from Justin Locke!
For more information, please do feel free to visit justinlocke.com. The complete script of Peter VS the Wolf is there, along with excerpts from the book and lots of other fun stuff.
Hope you all have a fun summer and see you in the fall!
best, Justin Locke
