For those of you who don’t know me very well, I am quite the aficionado of swing dancing. Two nights a week (usually Tuesday and Saturday) I go to a swing dance event in Boston and I sashay dozens of beautiful young women across the dance floor. What can I say, it’s a filthy job, but someone has to do it. 😉
So a kind of amusing thing happened to me a couple of days ago and I thought I would share it.
All across the country, there are these events known as “dance weekends.” Simply stated, hundreds of swing dancers (of all skill levels), along with a collection of top dancers and teachers, take over a hotel, doing workshops, competitions, and exhibitions all day, and then they dance until dawn.
We just had one of these big events (the “summer hummer”) here in Boston. I did not attend, but on the Monday after, I went to a local small weekly dance. As was expected, there were a few “out-of-towners” there from weekend event, including one woman that I had never seen before. She was obviously very good, and there weren’t that many people there, so I screwed my courage to the sticking place and asked her to dance.
Silly me. Turns out I was dancing with Tessa Cunningham, one of the top West Coast Swing dancers in North America. What fun. And how gracious of her to dance with an intermediate leader like myself.
A video of her performing is below with her partner Myles.
