Introducing the Go-Green Publishing Partnership at JLP

I often get very complimentary notes from readers telling me how much they like my books. In fact, they often tell me they like them so much they have shared them with all fifty of their friends and co-workers.

While I am of course very glad that so many people enjoy my work, there is also a part of me that cringes when I hear that, for it feels like lost sales. But it was my own fault, for up to now the only way I could make money on my books was by selling new copies, and why should anyone buy a new one when they have an unused copy lying around the house? So, after thinking this through, I decided it was time to yet again depart from the archaic business-as-usual methods of dropping-like-flies publishing houses. Instead, I decided to come up with with a better system, where I can work more efficiently and cooperatively with my customers, spread the love, and help to save the planet at the same time. So here's the deal:

If you buy a copy of Real Men Don't Rehearse and/or Principles of Applied Stupidity, and after reading it you decide to give it to a friend, congratulations, you are now a partner in Go-Green-Publication. By sharing the book(s) with a friend, you have

1) Given them a book they will really enjoy,
2) You have saved a part of a tree (also the energy and noxious chemicals) that would have been used to manufacture and print an additional copy,
3) You saved some of the gas and carbon emissions used in hauling an order of books home in my car,
4) You saved me using one of the hundreds of padded envelopes I use every year,
5) You have saved the energy and postage it would have cost to ship the book to your friend.

Of course, our being partners, and you being a publisher, it would be nice if you would pay the author a royalty. It's actually a great deal-- instead of paying almost $20 for a new book (with the shipping), standard royalty fees to authors are just 15% of the retail price, In this case, the base sale price book is $15, and 15% of that is just $2.25. When you think of all the software and music you buy that you can't legally share with anybody, you must admit, this is a great deal.

Now please understand, these are just guidelines . . . I know that if you bought a book, your spouse probably read it too, as did your son or daughter etc. etc, and in fact I always assume that every book purchase will be read by an average of four people. BUT . . . if you are loaning it to more folks than that, I hope you will consider giving me a piece of the action!

I have made this very very easy for you to do, thanks to the wonders of Paypal. (Note, you do not need a paypal account, you can just use any credit card.) Just click on the link below and fill in the amount. At last, I will be published by someone else! What fun.

Thank you again for your interest in my work. Thank you for recommmending my books to a friend. Thank you for reducing carbon emissions. And thank you for supporting your local bass player turned self-published author.

Note, when you contribute, there will be no questions asked, and you will get a big fat thank-you e-mail from me, and I will probably invite you to my bass couture website, which is yet another way to support your local author!

Again, to everybody, thank you so much for buying and/or reading Real Men Don’t Rehearse and/or Principles of Applied Stupidity. “Being published” is a dream come true for me, and having brought myself to a space in life where I can actually contribute something of value to people in this manner is more rewarding than I can say.

Note, recommending me to your local association manager to be a guest speaker is an even better way to contribute!

Fun Facts About Real Men Don't Rehearse:

The first draft was over 90,000 words (current length: approx. 45,000 words). There was no official record, but writing and editing the first edition took well over 1200 hours. Original cover design (done by the author) took something like 80 hours, and is redone for each new edition. Improvements in text, reformatting, and proofing of each successive edition (there have been five so far) requires approximately 150 hours of editing. The books are printed in Lowell, MA and the author picks them up personally. Each box of 40 books weighs 22 pounds. All individual sales through Amazon and this website are packed and shipped by the author, and all wholesale sales to music and book stores are shipped by the author as well.

According to Wikipedia, there are approximately 172,000 books published in the United States every year (and 200,000 published in Great Britain). That's just the number of NEW titles, not the reprints of past books. Of these, only 2% sell more than 500 copies. RMDR met that benchmark in its first 6 months.
Real Men Don't Rehearse is an amusing inside look at the zany secret world of professional orchestras. It is illustrated with dozens of humorous tales of musician antics and concert meltdowns.
